GENERAL INFORMATION | The Indianapolis Propylaeum, a literary & social club for women was founded in 1888. The club relocated to it’s the current location in 1924, after their original clubhouse was demolished for the construction of the World War Memorial. The Romanesque Revival building located at 14th & Delaware Streets was constructed in 1890 by John William Schmidt, president of the Indianapolis Brewing Company. Open since 1924, the Propylaeum operates a Tea Room with a lunch & dinner menu. The building also functions as a banquet hall with guest rooms on the second floor. The Propylaeum Building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 & is located within the Old Northside Historic District.

WORK SCOPE | The Propylaeum Historic Foundation, Inc. engaged the services of Jacobs Pannicke Architects, now know as ARCHitecture trio, inc. to complete several projects. In 2001, a thorough window survey was conducted for 95 wood windows. Each window was individually inspected with detailed descriptions complied into a final document that outlines the restoration. Plans were also developed to incorporate an elevator within the building shell. The elevator will serve all four floor levels providing accessibility & the ability to transport banquet supplies with ease. Consultation in regard to the Historic Preservation guidelines associated with the Old Northside District was also provided.
