Stonewall Hall

ARCHitecture Trio is honored to be working with the Montana Heritage Commission (MHC) and the Montana History Foundation in their efforts to restore Stonewall Hall located in Virginia City, Montana.

Stonewall Hall was constructed in 1864, less than one year after the gold discovery in Alder Gulch.  Between 1865 and 1875, the building served as the home of Montana's Territorial Capitol and legislature. The second floor also served as the gathering space for the Virginia City Lyceum, offering a small library space for “civilized” young men. After the territorial capital was relocated to Helena, Montana, the building was converted for use as a retail clothing store by multiple proprietors.  In 1914 the front façade was significantly altered to accommodate the Dudley Garage.

In recent years the building has suffered from accelerating deterioration with portions of the building compromised from lack of repair and maintenance. The MHC recently acquired the property with the intent to see the building restored to its original historic character. ARCHTrio and its team of consultants will first develop a plan for immediate stabilization followed by restoration plans and interior renovation to return the building to its former prominence.
